The weather begins to warm up, the Gulf waters
begin to reach their Summer temperatures, the
snowbirds break a sweat walking to get the morning
paper but, the hottest thing around is the fishing!
Tarpon season gets underway in May and runs deep into July. This is sportfishing at its best. Tarpon migrate up and down the coastline just outside the swim zone breaking the surface as they gulp air and engage in their migration rituals. Tarpon are caught on 20 lb spin gear and Flyrods using live bait or flys which imitate the local offerings.
We do not cast until we see the fish! It is more like hunting rather than fishing. Our fish run on average from 75 to 125 pounds and a fish over 200 lbs is caught in Sarasota county every year!
Tarpon fishing is not for the weak or impatient. Hooked fish can fight anywhere from 15 minutes to over 2 hours!
